Dorothy Wrights Story (Side character story from my main story THORN)

(Someone may not understand some things because of details that
concern my main story. such as NOTE, Wheelers, stuff like that,
who Dorothy is in my story. shes more of a side character.)

   Ding dong.
“Yes?” Asked a voice from behind the door.
“Yes, Miss Hawkins? I’m with the paranormal investigations organization, NOTE, of the state. We got a call about strange things going on around your home?” A man’s voice gently spoke.
The door opened with a click and a small older woman with bushy gray hair stepped into his sight. “Please come in.” the woman said, as she held open the door to make room.
The short man smiled with a bright gleam. He surprisingly looked normal for someone whose into ghosts and stuff. But his smile was somehow weird to me.
“Thank you, ma’am.” Said the man, as he stepped into the doorway.

I was watching from the kitchen of this house. The woman who answered the door for this person was my grandma. After my mother died and my father ran off before I was even born, I was sent to live with her. I was 5 then, and that was 5 years ago. My grandma had always told me that my long curly, dark brown hair was just like my Moms. That was why I always kept it down.
My grandmother had called these people after a few odd things were happening around our home. My grandmother said things would be one place, then move to another. She would hear clear voices in the hall, and footsteps upstairs. But the biggest thing that sent my grandma into calling these strangers was because of last night. Something crawled into her bed and tried to kill her she says. She claims she saw nothing there. She felt the feeling of fingers around her neck but she saw nothing. At first I thought it might be a dream she had and mistook it for reality. But that same night, I heard something too.

“So, Miss Hawkins, I would like to ask you a couple of things before we begin the process.”
My grandma had invited him to sit in the living room. They sat across the coffee table from each other. I still listened from the other side of the kitchen door.
The short man reached into his big black bag and pulled out an ordinary notebook. He clicked his pin and prepared to write. After he jotted down a couple of things, he looked to my grandmother.
She looked at him with a quite look. “Something is in this house sir. And I’m sure you know it.”
The man looked surprised. He must have thought she was crazy or something. Who wouldn’t? He stared at my grandmother for a while, then he closed his notebook and put his stuff back into his bag.
“Ma’am, I am from an organization called NOTE. You may have already known that however.” The man smiled as he reached back into his bag. He pulled out a small device that was blinking red. It looked like a tiny bug.
“This is a listening device. Lately there have been ‘traitors’, per say, within our group. Strange things happening to our customers, things like that. So, our boss has been keeping an ear open for strange behavior.”
I opened the door of the kitchen with a slight rush, “Why are you telling her that?” I hadn’t shown myself to him yet, so I was surprised to see him smile at me as though I had been there the whole time.
“Well missy, if I myself truly want to gain her trust, I needed to let her know she’s being heard from my people, and they will rush here if anything were to happen.” The small man placed the small blinking bug on the coffee table and gave me a wink.
“Now then, would you like to join in on story time?” The man asked me with a bright, weird smile. I felt something strange with this man, but I wanted to know what was happening. I made my way to my grandmother’s side and sat beside her chair on the floor.
“My granddaughter doesn’t need to hear these things.” Said my grandmother to the man. She seemed very nerves, I could tell because her hands were shaking.
“Miss Hawkins, with all due respect, your granddaughter is a part of everything as well. She may have seen or heard something very important. Would it be alright if she listened and shared with us?” The man was firm but calm with his voice, as he talked my grandmother into letting me stay.
My grandma took a deep breath and nodded her head. The man smiled and nodded along with her.
“Alright, now, little miss, what is your name?”
“Dorothy. My name is Dorothy Wrights.” I looked into the man’s eyes as he smiled at me.
“OK, Miss Dorothy, tell me some things that have happened to you recently in this house.”
“I haven’t experience anything.” I told the man.
He seemed surprised. Which, I guess I understand that. But even if I explained everything I thought I had seen or heard, he would only think I was crazy. Just like everyone elts.
“Miss Dorothy, are you sure you haven’t seen or heard anything strange while living here?” The man calmly asked me again. He must think grandma is crazy. If I say anything he might think I’m crazy too.
“I’m sure.” I answered.
The man took a deep breath and looked disappointed. He grabbed the little bug like device off of the table and placed it back in his bag. “That’s fine. I’m glad that you haven’t heard anything. It can get very scary. I wouldn’t want you to experience that.” The man pulled out his notepad and wrote on it quickly, then placed it on the table in front of us. “Sense this is the case, it’s possible that you, Miss Hawkins, are possessed.”
My grandma’s eyes widened and she began to shake a lot more than before. Possessed? Did he say she was possessed because I said I hadn’t seen anything? What would happen to her now?
“I want to bring over my team members who can easily tell these things. We can be back here as early in the morning as you like, ma’am.” The man packed up his stuff and stood up from his chair.
“Wait, you’re not going to just leave me here another night are you?!” My grandma leapt from her seat and reached over the coffee table in front of her, grabbing the man by the sleeve. “What if it attacks me again?!” My grandma’s eyes began to tear up as her shaking intensified.
The man looked at my grandma with a surprising calmer look on his face. He then sat his bag on the coffee table and laid one hand on my grandma’s shoulder and the other on her arm, which was still clinging to him.
“Don’t worry ma’am. It won’t attack you tonight.” The man smiled down at her as her shaking calmed down a little. She let go of his arm as he picked up his bag and headed for the door.
My grandma stood still and silently. Her eyes were stuck in a gaze and her shaking had finally stopped completely. I followed the man over to the door and watched him open it to leave. He turned around and looked at me with a smile. “Thank you, Miss Dorothy, for your statement. I will be back in the morning for the final stages.” The man then stepped out of the door, and closed it silently behind him.

That night, just as the man had said, nothing happened to my grandmother. She slept better than I had seen her sleep in a long time. I’m not sure why but she seemed to trust that man a lot.
The next morning at exactly 6:30 a.m. the man returned, bringing along 3 others with him. 2 men and a woman. The woman was tall and thin with short red hair that was cut like a boy’s, but had a girlish twist to it. She wore long black boots with short black shorts. Everything she had on was black except for her bright purple ear rings and bracelets.
One of the men was small looking with short brown hair and big dimples in his cheeks. He wore long black boots as well, but he had long black pants that went over them. He looked pretty young. Maybe even a teenager was what I thought that first.
The 3rd person was a big dark skinned man with a shaved hair cut. He was taller than the woman and probably two times her width. He had long black boots as well just like the other two, but he wore longer knee length shorts. Unlike the shorter man.
The three strangers looked like dark super heroes from afar. I had never seen anyone like them. It gave me a thrill deep within me. I began to quiver with excitement.
“Good morning Miss Hawkins. I have returned just like I said. How was your night? Anymore problems?” The man who had visited us yesterday smiled big at my grandmother who stood in the doorway.
“No sir, thank you, I slept wonderfully thanks to you.” My grandma smiled at the man and nodded her head slowly. Her bushy gray hair bounced around as she moved. I stood beside her in the doorway, holding onto her pink and blue gown she had made herself. My eyes looking over the people in front of us with caution.
The man looked down at me and smiled his weird looking smile. “And good morning to you, too, Miss Dorothy.”
I kept myself from smiling back. I still couldn’t trust him for a strange reason. I was better off not speaking much to him.
“Now now, why don’t you all come in.” My grandma said, as she moved away from the doorway, opening a path for the strangers.
“Thank you very much.” Said the red headed woman, who was standing behind the man. Her voice was gentle and a lot softer than I would have thought.
The 4 people came inside, walked into the kitchen and laid their things on the counter. The three people in black all looked around the kitchen. They were acting like it was some kind of museum.
“Miss Hawkins,” said the man, who again smiled at her with his odd smile. “These are my teammates. The woman here is Anna, the short one there is Brick.”
Brick made a face at the man after the word short. I guess that wasn’t something he favored being called.
“And the big one here is Davon.”
Davon nodded and lowered his head. He was a big guy but he seemed to be soft on the inside.
“Oh goodness, it’s nice to meet all of you.” My grandmother reached out her hand and shook each one of theirs. She was a whole lot more cheerful today.
The man pulled out a chair from our table and sat down. The kitchen was small so everything was mainly in one close area.
“So, let’s get right to the point.” The room became silent and all eyes went to him. “Davon, can you tell us a little about what you’re feeling right now?”
Feeling right now? Does it matter what he’s feeling? Aren’t they supposed to be searching for ghosts and stuff? Davon closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He stood in silence for a moment as he breathed. After a while, he opened his eyes again. “I can say there is something in this house. The strongest area is in a room upstairs.” Davon turned to my grandmother, “And don’t worry Ma’am, there is nothing possessing you.”
My grandmother became instantly relieved. “Thank goodness!” She reached out her hand and touched his arm. Davon smiled down at her, then looked over at the man and nodded. The man smiled and stood up from his chair. “Alright then, Miss Hawkins, you and your granddaughter will need to step out of the house for a moment. Just, stay in the neighborhood and return in about 25 minutes. Ok?” The man walked us to the door and led us outside. “Thank you for your corporation. This will all be over soon.” He then stepped back inside and closed the door.

It had been 15 minutes sense we had been outside. My grandma had gotten the mail and the two of us had walked around the house twice. We sat down on the steps in front of the door and waited a little while. My grandmother sighed and stood up. “Dorothy dear, I think I’ll go visit Mrs. Ginger next door real quick. She has one of my special plates anyways. I should be back before they come out, ok?” She headed over towards the street and began down the road. Before she disappeared around the few trees and bushes, she turned and waved to me. I waved back and watched her bushy gray hair vanish behind the bushes.
5 minutes later I heard something break from inside the house. It was very loud and seemed to be coming from upstairs. I jumped up from sitting on the steps and grabbed the doorknob. It was locked! Why? I thought I had checked it after he closed it behind us! I started knocking and knocking. I thought that even if I shouted they might respond. But no one came. Just then, I heard another crash. It almost felt like it shook the whole house. Along with the crash there was a scream! I couldn’t take it anymore! I just had to get into this house! I knew of a way in. the window in the basement was always left open! I could go through there. I took off around the house, found the basement window, slipped through and landed on a table below it. From there I ran up the tiny steps and popped out where the basement door was. Luckily it was unlocked. I was in the hallway by the kitchen, under the stairs. Just as I peeked out, another crash came from upstairs. I jolted out of the door and took off up the stairs. The hallway upstairs was short but for the first time it felt miles long. I searched every room until I came to the last one. My grandmother’s room. The door was closed and everything was muffled. I could hear talking and crashes, but didn’t understand any of it. The only sound I could hear clearly was the beating of my heart. I tip toed over closer to the door. My hand reached over and grabbed the doorknob. I slowly turned it and gave it a tiny push. I can say now, it might have been the biggest mistake of my life. As the door opened just enough for me to see through, I saw everything. I saw Anna, jumping around the room swinging her weapon this way and that. I saw Brick, twisting around in circles, creating bright flashes of light around him. I saw Davon and the man with the smile crouched in a corner with blood all around them. It wasn’t Davon’s, so it must have been the man’s!
I opened the door wider and wider, until it was completely open. My eyes widened and I saw the room. The walls had been completely knocked away! The bed must have gone with them too. Everything was blowing everywhere and the air was so thick. I felt it all surround me at once. It was overwhelming. I fell to the ground, hitting my knees pretty hard. I looked up once again. I saw what seemed to be thousands of dark shadows. Is that what they fight? Are those the ghosts? I couldn’t think of much more it could be. The room was extremely loud now. I couldn’t understand how I hadn’t been hearing all of this. I could feel my mind blacking out. Everything was getting darker. I could hear a loud buzzing in my ear and my breathing felt heavy. Before I knew it I had hit the floor, laying flat on the side of my face. I saw the man covered in blood. Our eyes met and his face instantly turned to shock. I could see him jolt up from the corner and start heading towards me. He instantly hit the ground and fell to his face. Davon lifted him up. I could tell the two of them were shouting but I couldn’t hear anyone. I remember the last thing I saw the most. A creature with a human shaped body. A long pink and blue gown that was ripped and torn and bushy gray hair. Its face turned to me. In that moment, I saw nothing but a monster.

I don’t know how long I was asleep, or if what I had seen was real or not. But I woke up in a hospital bed, staring up at the off-white colored ceiling. My eyes slowly searched the room around me. It was small and had a TV which was turned on. The wallpaper was ugly, and the window was cracked open. What was I doing there? How did I end up in this place? My face felt tight and my arms felt numb. The only thing I could hear was the television. I looked down and saw a needle in my arm. I reached up to touch my face, only to hit a large plastic thing stuck to it. It was pumping me air that felt cold. I noticed beside me a tray of food. It hadn’t been eaten yet. I wonder if it was for me.
Just then, a person came through the doorway. I recognized him right away. It was the man with the weird smile! The one I had seen covered in…covered in, what?
“Oh! Dorothy!” The man’s face lit up. He ran to my side and touched my hand. “Dorothy? How are you feeling? Can you hear me ok? Can you see me? Dorothy?”
I yanked my hand away from his. “I’m fine!”
The man let out a sigh of obvious relief.  He sat down on a stool that was beside the bed. “I’m so glad you’re ok.” He seemed extremely genuine when he spoke now.
“What…happened?” I looked him deep in the eyes as his face became a lot paler all of a sudden.
“You…saw a lot of things. I know you must be shocked.” He looked away from me and down at his feet. He had scratches and bruises all over him. “I…have to tell you something, Dorothy.”
I felt my heart sink for some strange reason. Maybe I already knew what he was going to say.
“Dorothy, your grandmother…she…is dead.” He looked me in the eyes again. His face was very sorry. I could somehow just tell.
“She…died before I met you.”
What? How? I couldn’t understand him. What did he mean? Died before we met? That’s impossible! My grandmother was there! She was with me!
“Listen, the Miss Hawkins I met was not the real one. She was a monster.” The man took another deep breath and stood up from his stool. “She was being controlled by a demon, much stronger than I thought at the beginning. That’s how I wasn’t able to notice her being a fake.” He looked away from me again. He must be regretting some things.
“So how was she a fake? She took care of me like always! She smiled at me like she always did! How was she a monster!?” My voice began to rise louder and louder. I could feel my eyes beginning to water. I felt too confused to truly be sad. What the heck was going on?
“I know you are very confused right now. And I understand. The monster was in the true body of your grandmother. She had died while you were away, I assume. It was a quick heart a tack.” The man looked away from me again. “I assume the demon found her quickly and took control of her soul. Turning her into a monster.”
Heart a tack? Demon? How would I never know this? She seemed fine to me until all the strange things began to happen around her. I suppose all that wasn’t her though. It was a monster?
“Why did she call you then? If she was a monster, wouldn’t that mean she was trying to ketch herself?”
The man shook his head. “I don’t know. Maybe the demon was bored. Maybe he wanted to test some of his powers out. Most demons can’t cover their monsters presents, but this one could. Maybe…that was what it was testing. Davon felt something small though. So it was revealed I guess.” He walked over to the TV that sat up on a high shelf and turned it off.
“Did you kill it?”
The man froze. I could only see his back, but I could tell he was nerves. “Yes. We killed it.”
“Where is the body?”
The man turned around and looked at me. “It’s gone.”
“Her soul, was it set free?” I truly needed to know. I felt like my whole world would be forever torn apart if I wasn’t able to know.
The man’s face calmed down and loosened its tension. “Yes. She was set free.”
From those words my tears were sparked and they came pouring down my face. The tears slipped through the gas mask on my face as I let out my cries. It was sadness. Lots of sadness. But it was also relief. I felt at peace knowing she was free. Somehow, it made it all better.

I fell asleep after crying for what felt like hours. The IV was taken out of my arm and the air breather was taken off my face. I slept peacefully, and silently.
The man slept by my side throughout the night. He had fallen asleep while watching over me. I don’t think it was guilt that had him there beside me. I think that, along the way, a much stronger force had put us together.

           Ring, Ring.
“Hello?” Dorothy picked up her cell phone as she dug through her bag trying to find her keys to the base training facility building. “Ah, found them.” Dorothy unlocked the doors and pushed them open. “Oh no, it’s nothing. So, what were you saying, old man?”
“I was asking why it is that you having had the weekly report given to me yet!” The old man spoke through the phone from the base house. He sat back in his chair and spun around to his desk, searching once again for the report.
“I told you before, didn’t I? I had to add something to it last night so ill get it to you this afternoon!” Dorothy rolled her eyes as she strolled through the hallway of the base training facility.
“Dorothy, I understand that you sometimes feel like you can get away with things, but don’t get loose about to much!”
Dorothy held the phone away from her ear and rolled her eyes once again. “Right right, I got it, old man.” She added; as she slipped the key into the door of room one.
The old man sighed and switched the phone to his other ear. “Alright, just this once. And why do you still call me that? I told you a million times its ok to call me Dad!”
Dorothy let out a giggle as she switched on the lights. “Yea yea, I know.” Dorothy continued down the long hallway towards room two. It became silent on the phone between them. Dorothy stopped in her tracks as she checked to see if he was still there. “Old man?”
“Dorothy, I have always thought of you as my daughter.”
Dorothy smiled and continued down the hall. “I had a dream last night.” She paused as she tossed her keys up into the air and catching them as they came down. “It was more of a memory, though.” Dorothy reached room two and slipped the keys in to open the door.
“What memory?” The old man asked as he chuckled under his breath.
“The memory of when I met you.”
It became silent between them for a moment, as Dorothy opened the door to room two and reached for the light switch. She stopped before she turned it on, and lowered her hand. “I have always thought of you as my Dad.”
It was silent once again, and there was a glow on both of their faces. Neither could see the other, but they both just knew.
“I have to go now, Dorothy.” The old man said through the phone.
Dorothy sighed, “Alright, me too. I’ll have that report to you this afternoon. Maybe we could grab lunch, too.”
“Yes, I would like that.” The old man smiled and switched the phone over to his other ear. “I love you.”
Dorothy smiled and couldn’t help but remember her dream from last night. She felt as though she had gone back in time, and recalled everything he had done for her. Everything that happened those few days brought them together. She recalled the moment her grandmothers front doors were open, and the short man with the weird smile appeared. The moment in the hospital when his cold pale hands grabbed hers with joy, asking over and over if she was ok. Most of all, she remembered his offer. The offer he asked that night after she awoke, after crying herself to sleep.
“Would you be my family?”
Dorothy leaned into the phone, pressing her cheek as close as she could. “I love you too, Daddy.”

This is Dorothy Wright’s story. She is like the main trainer at the base training facilities. This is the story of when her life was introduced to NOTE. As you find out, the Old man is her adopted father.
I didn’t have this in mind before writing this actually, it just happened. But I really like it. So im totally going with it! I want to add this into the book MAYBE. But there are a lot of people who will have back stories, so maybe all non important back stories will be separate? Idk.
